Note that these pictures are from the "shanty towns" of Soweto rather from the much more habitable areas of brick homes and paved streets. The residents of these shanty towns have fallen on hard times and can often live rent free here. There are many
orphaned children here as well as single mothers (comments by Bruce Damer).
