Demetri Terzopoulos

Dr. Terzopoulos, with a PhD ('84) in Computer Science (AI) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was affiliated with Schlumberger, Inc. from 1985 to 1992, serving as Program Leader at research centres in Palo Alto, CA, and Austin, TX and a research scientist at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab, Cambridge, Massachusetts during 1984-85.

His published works include more than 200 scientific articles, primarily in computer vision and graphics, but also in computer-aided design, medical imaging, artificial intelligence, and artificial life. He has given over 200 invited talks around the world on his research, including several distinguished lectures and keynote addresses.

Much recognised, Dr. Terzopoulos was awarded two of Canada's most distinguished research awards, the Killam Research Fellowship in 1998 and a E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship in 1996. From 1989-96 he was an AI and Robotics Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. Other citations include five university Excellence Awards, an award from the American Association for Artificial Intelligence in 1987 for his work on deformable models in vision and awards from the International Digital Media Foundation and from Ars Electronica, the premiere competition for creative work with digital media for his work on artificial animals for computer animation and virtual reality. Additionally, he has served on DARPA, NSF, and NIH advisory committees and on the programmme committees of the major graphics and vision conferences.
